Epic World Record History: Most Air Guitar Windmills In One Minute

September 16, 2011 Posted by Emily Miethner

In 1989, while performing his trademark “guitar windmill” move, The Who’s Pete Townshend impaled his hand on the tremolo bar and required hospital treatment. These are the kinds of injuries that can result from good, hard rock-and-roll.

Peter-Townshend-1966 World Records

The following world record competitors have risked bodily harm to pay tribute to Townshend. In true VH1 style, we go behind the scenes, tracing the history of this hardcore record.

Most Air Guitar Windmills In One Minute

The current record of 137 was set at the Pitch Fork Music Festival by Joseph Gunderson in 2009.

The record was born in paying homage to legendary guitarist Pete Townshend. Hayley Kennedy of Brooklyn, New York completed 125 air guitar windmills at a party in Williamsburg in 2009. Since then the record has been beaten three times.

Sure, 137 windmills in 60 seconds is a very tough standard to beat, at least for humans. But with all the rock concerts that happen each and every day, it’s surprising that this record hasn’t been broken in over two years. If you reckon you can take it on, submit your attempt at recordsetter.com/submit.

Otherwise, here are some records that have not yet been set, meaning that if you submit one of these categories, you’ll become a world record holder!

Three World Records Waiting to be Set:
  • Most People at a Concert Doing Air Guitar Windmills
  • Most Parties Attended in One Night
  • Most Pete Townshend riffs played in One Minute

Longest Time Smiling

Having a blue day? Try this record for an instant mood booster. It’s a brand-new category, first set at four minutes, 6.15 seconds on September 8 by Peter Craig of Adelaide, South Australia, then broken the next day by Scott Woodson of Rochester, New York. Woodson is a habitual over-smiler, as he says in his video: “I smile all the time. I smile for breakfast, I smile for lunch and I smile for dinner. Once I even smiled for dessert.”

Another new category in the genre of mouth endurance is this accomplishment by Allie Ray of Queen Creek, Arizona. After warming up with a bit of talking and gum chewing, you’ll just need to keep your tongue rolled for eight minutes to claim the record.

If you beat the current record, held by Jeff McHenry of Katy, Texas, and still hold it on the October 12 deadline, you’ll get the money.

This record is but one of the 100 being set and broken in our Stride Long Lasting Record challenge.
